Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: With exception of the trail up to Sentinel and the trail from the Merrowvista Ledge Cabin to Mt. Flagg, these trails do not get much use. They can be tricky to follow at times and the trail from Flagg to Shaw is pretty rough. It could really use some attention up near the top of Shaw, but better blazing would help most of the route, even near the very beginning. There is fresh blazing from the cabin to Flagg (mostly), but not elsewhere. A few blowdowns were encountered and most weren’t too difficult to get around. There’s one on the Sentinel Connector that could use a little attention.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Ours was the only one on the trail today (but we also saw very few people).
Bugs
Bugs: Oh dear Lord the black flies…

Comments
Comments: We were trying to keep it nice and easy on this insanely humid and hot day, and were attempting to avoid thunderstorms. We were successful with the latter but not so much the former. The humidity combined with the fact that it was 88 degrees on top of Mt. Shaw with only an intermittent breeze (Mountain Forecast said it was only supposed to be about 70) made this tougher than it should have been (though, if you don’t like navigating a pile of microwave-sized rocks for about 8 miles, avoid this route). Clocked out at 9.6 miles in total. And did I mention the black flies? Yeah, they were epic.
