Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We opted for the tried, true, and shorter "old" route with three crossings. All very easily navigated with little thought needed for foot placement
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in fine shape, aside from one minor blowdown in the col between Signal Ridge and the summit proper. I did not have my saw on me today or it would have been gone
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No issues
Bugs
Bugs: The skeeters where something fierce, especially this morning. The worst I have ever seen. Deet be damned, they didnt care. We remarked we looked like PigPen from Charlie Brown with the swarms above our head - which someone our way out remarked the same thing! I might need to go Speare to get a transfusion. Seriously, BRUTAL.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There are a pair of microspikes hanging on the pemi wilderness sign at the summit.

Comments: Signal Ridge Trail, abandoned Signal Ridge Trail

A FINE day in the forest was had. Early start to beat the hordes - and thunderstorms but as of this typing (1111) it is still a lovely day here in the North Country. This turned into an unintentional speed version of Philip Carrigain, not for the storms but because the bugs where so thick. I was often killing 3-5 in one swat - I probably looked like I may be in the midst of a seizure, arms flailing everywhere slapping them skeeters. They ebbed considerably once we got into the ascent portion of the hike. Absolutely COMMANDING views of the inside of a nimbostratus cloud, though some restricted views where enjoyed along the exposed ridgeline. This was my thirteenth time here, and the first time I found an old telephone pole with guy wires in the switchbacks. Something new every time! Trails are wholly devoid of snow, aside for one patch big enough to stand on and take a terrified face picture. Up high there are some fiddleheads just about prime for picking. In the col between SR and the summit if I recall. PR got lowered a bit today. I guess I should hike during bug season more often (NOT)
