A FINE day in the forest was had. In true Nordic_Gal fashion, we just parked on a random pull off on 112, took a compass bearing, and off into the woods we went. Our original plan was to follow a drainage on the ascent, but our initial line kept pulling us to the right. We ended up hitting the ridge crest north east of the summit, through mostly scrappy woods. Decent moving, though tricky at times. Found a lovely ledge outcrop at 3400 feet with a commanding view of Mt. Chocorua (Or Shaka-Khan, or Chocula, Or Chocococo as we kept calling it). We found the recognized summit and we where only the third and fourth this year to visit, apparently. I poked around for "treasures" as we call them - moose sheds - while Nordic_Gal enjoyed her snickers. No luck. We then followed a moose herd path that resembled a darn highway. I have no idea how Nordic_Gal missed it, but on said highway, I found my first shed bushwhacking! I was shaking in excitement!! It is a little chewed up and needs some cleaning but its a really nice one. It was quite comical affixing it to my 15L pack. We continued along said highway for about another 200 feet - and we found another! They are both of similar in size, and opposites, so we think its a matched set. Nordic packed that one out - and gifted it to me at the car :) We descended the line we wanted to orginially ascend, north of the drainage that cuts south easterly from the Kanc and found much better woods. Even hobbled with our antlers, we made it from the summit to the car in just over 40 minutes. Did note some faint evidence of a very old skid road along said drainage. We also came upon a fine "promontory" at the confuluence of two brooks. Thats your sctabble word of the day, which was learned from the WMNF Guide Book on our way out! (See Wamsutta trail description. Or Chandler. I forget). A fine day to visit Sagamore Kancamaugus (KanK - ah- maww - gus) and not as tourists would say, "kayn - gah - mayn - gah" Another one for the NH100 Highest! |
