One small spruce down lengthwise on Jewell Trail in the old blowdown zone. Can be passed to the side. As noted by MaineGuy, the cairns in the alpine zone on the Jewell Trail are not prominent. The trail sign at the junction of the Gulfside Trail and Sphinx Trail is down on the ground with the Sphinx Trail sign missing (only the Gulfside sign remains). |

Not many insects until I descended the Jewell Trail below the tree line in the late afternoon. |

 | Comments: |
The Jewell Trail has a steady moderate grade with pretty good footing below tree line and only somewhat rougher footing in the alpine zone making it a relatively easy access trail to the Presidential ridgeline.
Many spots on the trails that frequently have standing water or mud were dry today.
Alpine plants in bloom on the Gulfside, Jefferson Loop, and Clay Loop; alpine azalea, diapensia, and lapland rosebay. Also, saw bluebead lily, bunchberry, lady's slipper, and bluets.
Lots of hikers including a Colebrook hiker working on the grid over 70. Another presidential traverse hiker to finish the NH48 4K on Eisenhower. |
