Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Main reason for this report was to put notes out there for people hiking the Slide with dogs. My 5yo black lab, who is VERY experienced in the Whites, didn't really have "trouble" but it wasn't his easiest hike ever. The majority of the slide is managible if your dog is used to ledges/scrambling/bouldering and can jump up 18"-24". There were a few spots where he picked a bad line and needed to be coaxed to the right spot, but for the most part he was OK. On the most vertical ledges he definitely needed assistance in places. Maybe 6-8 times I had to lift or push his rear end up. This was the reasone I had him wear his pack, so I could use it as a harness with the handle. Definitely reccommend a harness if your dog is too heavy for you to straight pick up and over some 4'-5' steeps. Also please make sure you keep an eye on some of the loose gravel under their feet and yell out "rock" to anyone down below to warn them of any impending rockfalls. Overall, Frank did a wonderful job on the slide and heat. I will say that from the base of the slide to Liberty Spring, there isn't any water on the trail so make sure you have some for them. I had 3+ liters and (because of the heat/humidity/difficulty) we ran out just before the summit of Liberty. Pleanty of crossing down below to sip out of and cool off in. Don't think your dog will be ok on this if their "just a hiker"; they really need some experience on sketchy trails, ledges, drop offs, and need to be ok with getting picked up.
Bugs
Bugs: Not bad at all. They were out and about but didn't really bother me. Just some deer flies found us when we took a break just before the Flume summit.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost my Sea-to-Summit map sleeve somewhere on the slide trail. If you find it, it's yours.

Comments
Comments: Excellent day for a challenge. Not many people out (maybe 15-20) total on these trails which was nice. Frank the dog did a tremendous job on what will probably be his toughest trail in the Whites (Huntington and the North Tri slide aren't gonna happen). Heed the AMC guide's warnings and advice on the Flume Slide Trail; it's not for the inexperienced or faint of heart.
