Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Baker Road is in great shape, even for a lower clearance vehicle (mini cooper). Noted a lot of new crushed ledge down. There are a few spots right at the trailhead, however I parked about 400' shy of it in a large turnout across from a dwelling. Remember this is a residential neighborhood, be respectful of where you park and how much noise you generate.

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This is a great trail for dogs, so long as their humans bring them lots of water. There is NONE on this trail.

Comments: A FINE day in the forest was had. Wow. This one was a gem!! I couldn't get out of my own way this morning and this peak was mentioned to me last week by Sparrow. The Cross Rivendale Trail approach, from the lens of a newer hiker, or someone wanting to test an injuries recovery (NOT THE FIRST HIKE BACK) - this trail fits the bill. This would be a great approach for kids, also. There is not much to see down low but the trail bed is wide, well trodden, and ripe for speed. Kids would appreciate the slabs at about 1.4 miles - and offer reassurance to keep on going. Up until about the mile mark, the trail is amazing. It then goes into a very large switchback which goes into a FINE stand of softwood. Obvious logging has occurred many years ago. The switchback offers a challenge for newer hikers, and I would not suggest doing this one after a rainstorm or first thing on a humid morning. I enjoyed it, though. Great conversation with a trio of ladies section hiking near Quimby's 1880 traverse marker. I am a land surveyor, and this spot is absolutely where I would set up :) The actual high point is actually north a bit from this location. (there is also some evidence of azimuth marks on the slabs at 2800) A few folks had mentioned to travel over to North Cube, as it has better views. That is an understatement. The views from North Cube are absolutely COMMANDING. Views of Sugarloaf (groveton), Kinsmans, Moosilauke, Washington, Osceolas, the entire Sandwich range, and Carrigain where noted. I actually found a lovely perch and had about a 45 minute snooze. I apologize to the couple that was on an adjacent ledge, I was probably snoring. What a feeling to open your eyes and have such a vast view. On the way out, i opted to 'bushwhack' the switchback, which was a great choice as it was so open and while steep, very easy. A fine day on this very close to home gem.
