Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Had to ford the Swift River at the start of Sawyer Pond Trail (only up to calves). Other crossings were barely a trickle in current drought conditions.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Newish double stepover on Mt. Tremont Trail where it parallels the main brook. Lots of unmitigated erosion on Mt. Tremont Trail and Brunel Trail. Sawyer Pond Trail is very brushy near the river.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Quite vexing on Sawyer Pond Trail and Brunel Trail (mosquitoes and deer flies). Some mosquitoes in the col. Could sit on the summits without issue. A few mosquitoes and deer flies on Mt. Tremont Trail, but not nearly as bad as the other side of the mountain.
Lost and Found

Comments
Comments: Entire traverse was mostly dry.

Sawyer Pond Trail was buggy and brushy in places. Brunel Trail roadwalk portion was unsavory due to deer flies. Not a heavily trodden trail elsewhere, but some dry erosion on the steeps. Recognized summit of Owl's Cliff could use a new notepad.

Dry erosion on the ascent up Mt. Tremont as well. Tricky footing on the descent in a few places from erosion (one place where, once a sapling finally gives way, some rocks are going to come down and make the quasi-scramble even worse). Goes to show you that even switchbacks are not enough to prevent erosion on White Mountain trails; drainage and stepping is necessary in places.

Hot day with mostly sunny skies. Did not see anyone until the summit of Mt. Tremont, then saw about half a dozen.
