Amazing views day and like a party at the summit with 10-20 hikers at a time savoring the view- many as part of traverses across adjacent peaks. Very dry trail and despite a few eroded spots it appeared to have weathered time remarkable well. The White Mountain Guidebook credits J. Raynor Edmands with smart rock step placement that made a moderate trail in an inhospitable environment - I marveled at his legacy over a hundred years later. Kudos to the couple who spotted a bike at this trail, parked at the Cog to hike Ammo to Monroe, traverse to Ike, then ride back (incl some uphill) after their hike on this very hot day.
We hadn’t done Ike in 20 years - it was our first 4K - and I’d forgotten how Edmands winds along the west (I think) side of the peak giving a tantalizing partial view of the Cog and Mt Washington starting at around 2.5 mi or so - before the big STOP sign at 2.8 mi and the brief talus field when the treeline meets the heavens, and the Crawford Path highway arcs across the rise.
While I think we won slowest group on the trail status, it was a day to marvel at mountains, and growth, and still having health and legs for this sport, and being part of the community of fellow hikers journeying to their own best summits. |
