| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Rt 16/Dam Rd in Maine, I turned left onto Parmachenee Rd which I followed for 6.5mi or so, then turned left onto Magalloway Rd just before reaching the NH border and followed it for 3-3.5mi before turning right onto what’s shown on Gaia as Haystack Mountain Rd. I parked about 3/4mi up the road on a short spur rd to a logged area. Parmachenee and Magalloway roads should be doable for all cars with care taken for smaller ones around the divots and rocks jutting out. Rocks in the road were often blazed in orange on Parmachenee Rd to call your attention to them. Beware of logging trucks on Parmachenee Rd as there still seems to be logging going on and I saw two. Haystack Mtn Rd was much rougher with numerous washout and such. I took my time at several points and even got out of my car to determine whether or not I could get over. I did indeed (FWD, mid-clearance) without any scrapes but you’ll need to be careful with only mid-clearance. The plan was to ascend from what’s shown on Gaia as Hawk Rd to the NW of the summit but that road looked much too rocky. High clearance only so I returned to the spot mentioned above and parked. Most of the washout I encountered that was a bit sketchy May have been between where I parked and Hawk Rd. |

Day 264, Peak 257. 1st of the day. Mid 60s and sunny to start at 8am. I’d planned a much earlier start but between missed turns to the peaks further south I wanted to do and a failed attempt or two along roads that didn’t get me to where I wanted to go, we had to settle for 8am.
From the very short spur rd I parked at 3/4mi up Haystack Mtn Rd, I ascended N/NE through thick brush. Lucky me, it was of course still sopping wet from the rain the day before. Moderate grade and often wet/muddy footing. The brush and logged area lasted for a little more than halfway up the peak and I began to hit actual woods around 2400ft. I continued at a bit steeper of a grade to the summit on the same E/NE bearing. Not hard to find the register. I returned the same way.
If doing this peak again, I would either 1) get a friend with a nice big truck to drive me up to the HOL on Hawk Rd or walk it so as to avoid the brush, or 2) check access from Meadow Brook Rd, shown on Gaia as gray. Not sure if it’s drivable or what but it would allow you to ascend the SE ridge of the peak. Similar distance and elevation but Gaia doesn’t show open/logged/brushy areas there. The hike was about 1.25mi with just under 600ft of gain. Took me 1.5hrs. 101 more days and 108 more peaks to go… |
