The difference in difficulty between doing this clockwise loop hike in winter versus summer is dramatic. For winter it is a beginner 4000 footer hike. For summer it is somewhere between moderate to difficult. This is due in part to the “steep ledges and fairly difficult scrambles” below the Mt. Jackson summit. In winter most of these are completely covered up with only the final summit ledge to ascend. Descending off Mt. Jackson via the Webster Cliff trail has its own challenges with steep wet slab rock to descend. A total distance of 6.5 miles can also be deceiving since much of the trail requires slow hiking through and around rocks and boulders. The stretch between Mt. Jackson and Mt. Webster does offer some relief with relatively little elevation change and more typical trail conditions. But all in all we had a great hike, good weather, and fantastic views. |
