Long story short: probably best to avoid this mountain.
I passed a local guy on Chamberlain Rd who was out walking his dog and asked him if it was okay to hike here. He told me that the entire top of the mountain is private property and that “there’s no legal way to approach it without trespassing.”
He (“Billy”) was very friendly and empathetic, but said that even he hasn’t bothered asking permission because “the woman who owns it” is less than receptive. He told me he just goes to the Belknaps when he wants to hike, despite the fact that Prospect is *literally* in his back yard.
He also suggested I drive along Prospect Mountain Rd to see the over-the-top intimidating signage...which threatens trespassers not only with the usual fines and jail time, but also an impacted ability to attend college or even get a job! Additionally, the signs insultingly instruct you to “Turn around now and go hike Mt. Major.”
Wow, probably best to steer clear of this mountain for the foreseeable future! |
