Comments: Today’s adventure brought me to Mt. Moriah’s SE ridge, where I bushwhacked to a narrow crevice and made an off-trail ascent to the summit.

Starting at 1,980 ft. on the Moriah Brook Trail, I left the trail and paralleled a nameless stream, heading in a NW direction; woods were variable with many boulders strewn about. Just before I reached the base of the crevice, I encountered some ledge bands that threw my route off and caused me to question the feasibility of the route; in the end, I was able to weave my way through the bands and continue up.

I considered hiking directly up the crevice, but it was filled with rocks that were wet and slimy from last night’s rain, so I ascended the dry rock on the right side of the gully. At 3,350 ft., after a few fourth-class scrambles, I dead-ended at near-vertical rock wall which prevented me from continuing further. Here, I was able to peer down into the 40-foot deep gully and enjoy some of the fantastic views towards North Carter. I searched for an alternate route, but encountered more steep cliffs; however, some thick whacking brought me to more reasonable terrain further east.

From here, I ascended to the ridge crest, where I spent much time enjoying the open rock and fantastic views. I did not visit the interesting peaklet further down the ridge, but I will need to check this out next time! The remainder of the bushwhack was a wet slog through mostly flat terrain, save for the summit cone; I did not encounter any other hikers while descending the Moriah Brook Trail. A very nice outing in the Wild River Wilderness.
