Trails: Success Trail, Mahoosuc Trail, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, August 20, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room because most people parked along the road. There is a small lot, but only one person parked there because it looks like it’s just part of the trail itself.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only crossing can be stepped over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The newly marked partial trail to the plane crash wreckage confused a number of people heading south who seemed to think they were still on the Mahoosuc (AT). Someone should erect a sign. We steered most of them in the right direction. Some of the bog bridges could use some attention, particularly along the summit plateau. Most are in good shape, but the few that are not are also in spots where the muck is the kind of thing that used to swallow up sabertooth tigers and woolly mammoths.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw three other doggos but that was on our way out. Ours had a blast. Just be careful around the plane crash site since there’s a lot of sharp metal.
Bugs
Bugs: One (1) singular, lonely mosquito briefly buzzed my ear. Probably some ticks in the grass at the beginning but we haven’t found any yet.

Comments
Comments: There’s now a partially marked trail now to the wreckage of the plane crash. It’s blazed in yellow when it’s in the trees and marked with cairns on the rocks, but the middle section is not well-delineated and there are random herd paths all over the place. In addition the newly placed cairns confused a lot of Mahoosuc/AT hikers who thought they were headed to Gorham only to find a dead end at the wreckage.

First time back in the mountains since the beginning of July. It’s been a crazy summer. Likely won’t be back again for a few weeks too thanks to more craziness. Ugh. Great day to be out, though, aside from the humidity which was pretty high today.
