Logging Road, ATV Trails (Corridor A, Heat Stroke, Bathtub, Kilowatt), bushwhack
I made a loop out of these 2 peaks on this way-too-hot day. I walked up the forest road (labelled CB-CH 19), noting the sharp right turn at the 1 mile mark (sign at the junction said "4168 TRAIL 19." Lady B and Italian's report call this road Smitty's), but I continued straight till I took a right (west) turn on an ATV trail headed directly for Sugar Mtn. This is part of Corridor A. For the few ATV's I encountered, I stepped well into the woods so they didn't even see me. I took this corridor till it's highpoint and jumped into the woods at the mini-cairn. Open woods to the recognized high point. I retraced my steps back and continued down the other side of Sugar Mtn on Corridor A, turning right on the aptly named Heat Stroke (sign for one-way traffic). Lot of ups and downs on this trail, but no ATV's. Took a right on Bathtub Trail then another right on Kilowatt Road, then followed the excellent intel from Lady B and Italian's report from 2019. The tree holding the summit jar is fallen over, but you can still access the jar. For the descent, I went NW through the woods, down to the ATV road, walked easterly up the road a bit and then climbed down a manmade rock embankment, being careful not to start a rock slide. I dropped into the open woods, and thought I might find an old road. There was the start of one, but it quickly petered out, so I dropped into a dry drainage going E-NE, and picked up a wide southerly spine, crossing many herd paths and grown-in roads, taking some as long as they went in the direction I needed. At the 1900' mark, I turned SW and slabbed between 2 mostly dry drainages, side-hilling for about 0.4 mile, picking up a woods road just before I encountered the upper part of Smitty's that I had been aiming for, north of an unnamed bump located almost between the 2 mountains. This road is undetectable when viewed from Smitty's, but it's almost directly across from another unmarked woods road that leads towards Sugar Mtn. I continued SE on Smitty's which led me to the sharp right turn I noted early in the day and then back to my car. 11 miles total. I probably could've done some direct bushwhacking between the peaks for shorter mileage, but I liked making better time on the roads, and the young brushy hardwoods between the peaks didn't make me think I'd have that much fun. Woods were mostly open for the descent off Jericho, though I had to make a big crescent-shaped route to avoid the southern cliffs. |
