Based on other reports this was going to be a tough one and it was! On the way up I pretty much went in a straight line from my parking spot to the peak. Lower down was moderately thick, nothing terrible, just a lot of head down, pushing through spruce branches. Near the top it opened up into a really neat combination of moss, small 1-2' spruce and intermittent tall spruce. This section was quite steep, but made gaining elevation quick and I hit the ridge right at the recognized high point. I signed in, had lunch and enjoyed the summit. Based on satellite images and previous reports it sounded like farther east was more open, so I followed the ridge SE a bit and headed toward the car. This was definitely better woods, but still not exactly easy going. I attempted to walk in the drainages where it was open, but the rocks were covered in moss and I kept slipping, so opted for pushing through the brush. A tough hike, but nice to see another area of the Whites! |
