Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the Magalloway lot. Magalloway Rd seemed to be in better shape than when I was on it just a month or two ago.l; no large rocks poking out. The fire tower rd however, was perhaps even worse than I remember it from a few years ago. I doubt a low clearance car could make it without significantly scraping the undercarriage. Mid clearance will still probably need to exercise some caution. Lots of rocks protruding out from the road. Also, seemed to be very busy this Saturday! A half dozen plus cars in the lot at 4pm. Saw many more driving out. Didn’t see a soul when I was here years ago.

Comments
Comments: Day 307, Peak 286. 2nd peak of the day after Deer South. Was going to bag this while the folks hiked Magalloway and possibly try and catch up with them at the top but alas they never left the car; guess Deer Mtn tired them out!

I walked down the road 1/3mi then whacked straight up the peak. Easy grades at the beginning became steep as I neared the summit but that was expected. The whack is only like 1/3mi as the crow flies and maybe only half of that is steep. The woods were hardwoods but maybe not quite as open as I’d have hoped. Some wet areas as there seemed to be very old skidder roads in here. The summit is all brush and ferns and allows nice views of the surrounding peaks. What a treat! The register is white and red and is just behind the true highpoint tucked away in a tree. Took me awhile to find it. I returned just east of my ascent line. No difference. Seems much easier than combining this with Magalloway. Sounds like woods may be nicer if you walk further down the road and follow close to the ridge.

The hike was just under 1.5mi (including road walk) with 400ft of gain. Took me just under 1hr15min but much of that was looking through the register at the top; many old entries :) 58 more days and 79 more peaks to go…
