We did a traverse of these 2 peaks, going up Weir Road, Flume Road, Weasel Trail, and starting the bushwhack just before getting to the ridge (just south of the east bump). We stayed on the south side of the ridge almost to the summit. For those of us who don't have hobbit hands and can't manipulate a 1-inch pencil, we left another pencil in the canister. We found fairly good going between the peaks by roughly following the meandering ridge up until the final 0.3 mile to Cushman, which is when we encountered a very steep ascent with cliffs and boulders (coming from the SE). There was a narrow mossy corridor going straight up, I mean straight up, that we carefully picked our way through. Towards the summit, it was a fight to the finish with the spruce. I had bushwhacked this mtn a few years ago from the north; the summit seems to be well-guarded by tight pencil woods, no matter how you approach it. After signing in, we went a very short way NW on the ridge to avoid an initial steep descent and then took a southerly bearing, finding pencil woods at first and then gradually opening up, really nothing thick or scratchy. Near the bottom, we picked up the Hubbard Brook Road that winds up the mountain a short ways, and took that back to the trailhead and the car. Total mileage for the day was 6.6 miles. Another fun day with Trekboots. |
