Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking was available on both sides of the highway. A gloomy forecast kept turnout relatively low for peak foliage season.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All easily managed. Water levels were lower than those I recalled from July, but the falls were still outstanding. The only slightly tricky part was avoiding mud on the crossing above Greenleaf Hut.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails were in excellent shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A half mile or so stretch of OBP just reeked of dog poop. The humid air really seems to hold the stink. Out of sight doesn't always mean out of mind.
Bugs
Bugs: No serious problems here. There are definitely some unabashed and well-fed chipmunks hanging around the usual picnic spots, and a very large wasp took similar interest in our food. We kept our food to ourselves.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Black Under Armor running glove was tied to a branch maybe a quarter mile from the trailhead on OBP

Comments
Comments: Absolutely beautiful day in peak foliage season. The forecast was for periods of rain and possible thunderstorms, but I figured it was worth it to try to make it to the ridge and assess the situation there. There was plenty of sun, very little wind, and gorgeous 360 degree views. We took our time going from Little Haystack to Lafayette, and when we left the summit of Lafayette at 2PM, there were ominous clouds moving in from the north. After a quick break at Greenleaf Hut, the worst weather we experienced was a brief sprinkle on OBP. Cold weather arrived the night of the 8th, but as of this writing, clear skies are supposed to accompany the colder temperatures the next few days.
