 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Rt 16 north of the center of Errol, turn west onto New Greenough Pond Rd and follow straight for almost 5mi. The road is dirt with some rocks protruding but is wide and thus should be doable for low clearance cars. At about 5mi, turn left onto a road shown on Gaia that heads toward NE Black and this peak. Although this road continues, park where it’s shown as stopping on Gaia. There’s plenty of room to park here. You’ll follow the road as shown on CalTopo from here. Continuing ahead brings you to a removed bridge and NE Black. |

Day 357, Peak 350. 2nd of the day after Abeniki. My last day of north country clean up peaks!
Though the old road is not at all obvious if driving by, if you park here at the pullout you’ll see an overgrown road here (the one shown on CalTopo) and can follow it. It’s been reclaimed by nature but has a herd path along it when it’s not too roadpike and usually provided decent walking. It becomes very wet at times particularly in the flat area at the base of the peak where the road turns west on CalTopo. Here, I continued straight on old skidder roads up to the peak. I followed this old roads basically all the way to the top. Another peak that is a hardly qualify as a bushwhack. Nice straight due south line from where I parked too! The summit area is pretty flat so it took a bit to come to the register but I wouldn’t say it was hard to find. I returned the same way.
This appears to be a very popular area for hunters. I ran into one on my next hike, heard gunshots on this hike, and was able to hear hunters talking not too far away. BLAZE ORANGE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for this time of year. The hike was just shy of 2mi with just under 300ft of gain. It took me 1hr to complete. 8 more days and 15 more peaks to go… |
