Comments
Comments: We started on the Centennial Trail (Appalachian Trail) climbing up to the junction of the Mahoosuc Trail where we turned left to reach the summit of Mount Hayes marked by a small cairn. No real views at the summit but fantastic views of the Presidential and Carter ranges. We continued descending and took the short marked spur trail on the left to Mascot Pond. Upon reaching the pond on the left side there was a large talus/scree slope with an obvious steep “herd path” which lead to one of the entrances to the mine. There was a steel grate but it wasn’t locked. Briefly stepped inside but passage narrowed shortly and I wasn’t prepared to crawl. Per information I reviewed after the hike there is another mine entrance a little higher up but we didn’t search for it.
Returned to the Mahoosuc Trail heading down and it reached snowmobile/ATV trails that had signs on it indicating where the hiking trail was and reached the old railroad bridge (which is used by hikers, ATV’s and snowmobiles).crossed the bridge to reach one of our parked cars.

Thanks to Barb, Sandy and Zelda for joining us.
