Comments: This is a beautiful woods walk with a great reward at the end. Since the ledge faces south and the grade of the trail is quite gentle I had no idea I was was headed for such a high cliff until I actually got there. Terrific views of the Mahoosucs, Carters, Presidentials not to mention Unknown Pond and the nearby Horn and Bulge. The trail is on the muddy side in a number of places, but nothing too deep. However, I think this might be more of an issue in the spring or after a heavy rain.
The Devil’s Hopyard is a fairly challenging walk. I cold feel the air cool and the moisture increase noticeably as I entered. There are many slippery spots. I ended up deciding my poles were not that helpful since there were many holes between the rocks that they would go down into; scrambling with all fours seemed to work better on the most slippery spots. Interestingly, I discovered a dead moose just before the end of the trail. It appeared fresh (a raven flew off as I arrived, but no obvious signs of scavenging yet) and I didn’t see any clear evidence it had been shot back in moose season. Considering the location, I wonder if it fell off the adjacent cliff.
