Comments
Comments: I typically hike Willard at least twice a week, so I know the trail quite well. The heavy rain in October coupled with a busy fall tourist season altered the nature of the trail a bit. The 'steep' section from Centennial Pool to the old carriage road has widened in parts due to washouts and 'hiker drift.' The long stretch of the old road up to the summit is the most obviously altered, though - the sides of the trail eroded noticeably after the big rain storm and debris flow down the trail dislodged some large rocks, leaving potholes behind. The muddy/wet part of the carriage road also experienced widening and erosion, both from debris flow and from a high volume of hikers attempting to walk around the mud, which I have observed on numerous occasions. It seems like that part of the trail is becoming more permanently wet/muddy as time goes on. Really though, the resiliency of this trail is impressive considering just how many people use it.
