Got a slightly later start than I planned, which ended up being more good than bad. There was a fair amount of mud/seepage from the recent rain down low. Not difficult to avoid except that leaves covered many mud holes. Made it up to the shelter with no issues. The ledges themselves were nasty just past the shelter. I was hoping that the sun would have a chance to melt things, but the lower ledges were shaded. I proceeded slowly up dry lanes between ice flows and was able to bypass some very icy ledges and hook back up with the trail below a very steep section. Fortunately the sun had melted enough water that it was flowing melted an narrow ice free lane up the trail/cliff. I was able to ascend very carefully, and fortunately this proved to be the crux of the route. Pretty smooth sailing up the ledges with only the occasional ice patch to avoid (keep your eyes on the ground!). Thicker ice was found below the summit of South Baldface, but this was also navigable with care. Didn't make it to the summit in time to proceed to North Baldface (had to be home on time), so I descended via Bladface Knob and the slippery brook trail. Shortly before the SBT I started down a what appears to be a ski trail before I realized I was on the wrong trail... not sure if that's an illegal trail, but it's not on any maps. Anyways, I got onto SBT and it was similar to the Baldface Cricle Trail. Damp and muddy in spots with a veneer of leaves, but overall a pleasant descent. Made it back to the car without any issues. With the snow coming in tonight/tomorrow, plan on the ledges being impassable until there is enough snow and ice built up to allow for good grip with spikes/crampons. |
