Comments
Comments: This was a simple rekky hike, to check on the status of some trail signs on the Elwell and Mowglis Trails and to enjoy a quiet, winter-conditions walk. It was definitely winter today near Firescrew and Cardigan.

Signs are in fine shape.

Orange Road (former Mowglis Trail from Sculptured Rocks Road to intersection with New Colony Road, near Cataloochee Mountain) is in its best shape now -- frozen with light snow/ice cover -- for walking up to the Mowglis Trail at its northern terminus, before it heads into the woods, intersects the Elwell Trail, and then heads to Crag Camp and Firescrew. Noted one set of footprints heading north on Orange Road. At the intersection of Orange Road and New Colony Road, several old sets of prints headed on the Mowglis Trail toward Firescrew; someone had driven up New Colony Road in the past day or so.

The intersection of the Mowglis Trail and Elwell Trail was relocated a few months back to pull it and some connecting trail out of a wet, poorly drained area -- we can confirm that this is working as intended, as the old, discontinued trail is full of iced-over standing water right now.

Light traction worked well on glaze ice and the few inches of crusty snow on the upper couple of miles of road and trail.

Very windy with snow squalls at the height of land at the beginning of the Mowglis Trail, but reasonably sheltered everywhere else.

We saw no one all day but a hunter, early on.
