Ammonoosuc trail was quick going, spikes all the way for 1/2”-4 or so inches up above near treeline. Loads of crunchy rime ice on the rocks around Lake of the Clouds hut. A bit drifted on the face ascending Monroe, kicked steps in but those are likely trashed from descending. Just a bit punchy through a crusty layer for a few 3-4” drop in several spots on Crawford Path heading up Washington but mostly smooth going with Hillsound spikes on the boots. North side of Washington had way more wind and way more drifted snow, 6-8” in most places made it hard/impossible to see the rocks below the blown snow top layer. Same around Gulfside. Loose powder descending Jewell was mighty treacherous, thankfully a kind fellow broke trail ascending as we exchanged trail reports. Jewell in treeline was beautiful, eventually nearing the Cog cutoff the snow tapered to frozen soil & gravel.. poor spikes took a beating and broke a chain on the Hillsounds. Time to get repairing for the next outing. Great day in the Presi’s for sure. |
