Varied conditions. Barebooted the first mile or so, where it was possible to avoid the intermittent ice. After about a mile the ice becomes more prevalent, and it was easier to put microspikes on and stay on the ice. About the cutoff to Mizpah Hut there was almost complete coverage in the trail of snow and ice - except - for a number of areas with standing or flowing water. Decent amount of ice on the short steep segment right before the summit of Pierce.
I was at the summit of Pierce early, and it was very windy, so I bailed on Eisenhower. Not really an "attempt" at all. The summit of Eisenhower was in the clouds, and it was cold enough and windy enough that I did not think the effort was worth the return.
Lots of people on the trail today. Nice talking to several people. Crossed paths with the AMC WHS groups on the decent. |
