Comments: Let's put a SMILE on that face!! A MAGNIFICENT day in the forest was had, a tough traverse on one of the shortest days of the year. "Stupid S#*$ Sunday's" never disappoint. It should be noted as well the snowline is so high, its about 3600! Ugh! We made good work of East Pond. Other's have noted having good luck launching from where the trail takes an abrupt Southerly turn by the HOL. I agree! We only ran into a short section of jail cell, worth the price of admission. Through the whole day, we found far better wood than expected. That does not mean it was easy. I actually took the lead on this one and lead mainly by compass bearings which was fun. Aside from my extremely circuitous route off of East that we almost went in a circle, ha ha. We hung just off the ridge lines and this worked quite well through the day. Nothing really of note to 3400, Middle, or West, though it does look a lot different. Sadly, someone has taken some spray painted blazes along the herd path in orange. We did note one set of tracks that went to the older HOL, they never did actually summit West. The herd path was also sad in how easy it was to follow in spots. It's amazing how much its changed in the last few years - and not for the better - this was a true whack once upon a time. We opted to go to Black Mountain for my NH200 as well, and then found great glades coming off, culminating in an XC ski trail and the MVP of the day, my Mom who waiting on the road to get us with all the heaters blasting :) Tough and tiring traverse but so worth it! I have never seen so many nettles and twigs on the bathroom floor and in the shower, ha ha. WHY SO SERIOUS?
