I have never seen so much ice. If you don’t have full blown crampons don’t even attempt either trail to the summit right now. I had to spend the whole time descending Red Ridge walking along the side of the trail to avoid the ice (which is too thick for spikes to grip) and because of the dusting of snow that just fell there’s no way to know if the rocks are covered in ice or just bare rock, making navigation difficult. The ascent up Moat Mountain Trail was harder than the descent due to how thick the ice was and bushwhacking around it uphill sucked. I genuinely do not recommend anyone try these trails unless they have legit crampons, NOT just micro spikes. |
