 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of room in the lot off route 113 just north of Cold River Camp. The toilet facility was open. No fees. No other vehicles in the lot although it appeared there was another set of tire tracks in the thin snow cover. |

Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |

Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Several small brook crossings on the Slippery Brook Trail. The widest is about 3 rock steps across. Take caution when stepping on the rocks as some are ice covered with some having a light snow covering over the ice. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail in generally good condition. Yellow blazes were painted on trees to mark the pathway in spots where there are intersections with old woods roads.
The tree falls were easy to get by. |

 | Comments: |
The hike to Eastman Mountain is comparable in distance and elevation gain to the Starr King / Waumbek hike even though Eastman Mountain is only 2,939 feet above sea level. As with the Starr King / Waumbek, this hike is good during the ice season as there are no steep grades and the footing is secure.
The surface conditions varied. There was bare ground with roots and rock, leaves topped with a thin layer of snow, crumbling frozen ground, ice, ice covered by snow, and running water. There was no significant snow cover. I'd guess the maximum snow depth to be about a half an inch at the higher elevation. I easily hiked bare booted up to the higher elevation brook crossing that had icy rocks. I put on the old pair of microspikes at this point. South facing slopes were snowless leaf covered ground.
Pay attention to the yellow blazes to avoid diverting off the trail on to intersecting old woods roads at the lower elevations on the Slippery Brook Trail.
I saw no other hikers today. Good views from the summit ledges. |
