Whereas other areas picked up a lot of snow, north of Campton, the visible new snow depth dropped quickly. Cannon advertised 8-11" of new snow, but like their financial claims, their snowfall claims were spin at best. In reality, there was 2-8" of new snow, generally in the 3-4" range.
Generally subpar shoulder season conditions on an awful trail (due to some of the worst erosion in the Whites). I put on old Tubbs Flex Alps at the start and stuck with them for the duration, as there were plenty of hidden blue ice patches that would have rendered Microspikes helpless (particularly with the sticky new snow on top). Mud pits are frozen/covered at this point. Had I only brought spikes, I would have turned around. Had I worn more aggressive traction, I think I would have struggled with all of the rock. Mountain snowshoes were clunky, but they seemed like the better choice for the conditions (best choice would have been to wait for some more snowpack here and go elsewhere for the time being).
A couple of snowshoers ascended from Lonesome Lake, but one booter was trashing their track.
I was hoping my sole track out and back on Kinsman Ridge would set up over night and bond to the ice, etc., however just as I was thinking that near the end, I encountered someone setting out with Stablicers. No idea how far they made it, but if their boot prints set up, it'll be an awful surface for all that follow in the short term future.
Cloudy late morning/early afternoon with light snow flurries throughout. Plenty of reminders that winter is on its way, but it is still technically fall. |
