Comments
Comments: Welch-Dickey loop was absolutely doable with just spikes, however, it would make the monorail that much more aesthetically pleasing if a few more people wore snowshoes on it. Drifts above treeline were navigable even in just spikes because foot holes were hard packed. I was surprised that the monorail was as stable as it was and had no drifts covering it even on the slabs descending towards Dickey from Welch. Also did Pine Flats, Yellow Jacket, and Smarts Brooke, all of which had almost no snow in some spots, lots of ice and frozen foot prints, and all you need are spikes for these trails. Nobody has done Smarts Brooke after the junction with Yellow Jacket ascending Sandwich Dome and although snow amounts were much lower (less than 6”) on Smarts Brooke Trail, I would imagine the totals would warrant snowshoes if some brave soul decided to ascend Dome via Smarts this time of year.
