Hoped to grab both Roberts and Shaw today, but found only 1 snowshoe track to Faraway after Roberts summit and nothing to Shaw after reaching Faraway. Snowshoes are absolutely necessary up to the second ledge area of Roberts and then again if venturing further toward Faraway/Shaw on High Ridge Trail as the track I followed turned out to be an out and back to Faraway.
I followed a previous snowshoer tracks on High Ridge Trail, from the summit of Roberts, through a gorgeous Beech Forest until the Faraway Summit Spur. The tracks continued only to Faraway Summit. After that was full on trail break in 2-3’ drifts and my MSR EVO’s sinking at least 12-16” deep on every step. Upon reaching the intersection of High Ridge and Faraway Mt Trail, I called an audible and headed down, breaking trail the entire way (including a few bushwhack sections to cut off the switchbacks).
Note- Shaw does not appear to have been broken out at all. |
