The Basin Cascades trail was very icy, but you can get around it on the sides of the trail for a bit. We were lucky with microspikes because the ice was wet, so we could walk up and down it. There were a few spots of slow going due to the ice. The river crossings were slow due to not being sure if the ice would hold, but it did. If it gets warm, the rivers wouldn't be passible. Once we got up to the Kinsman Pond Trail, it was snow except for one spot. We ended up walking along the pond to the shelter instead of on the trail. It was way faster. The Kinsman Ridge Trail was nicely broken out. We heard from everyone that Fishin' Jimmy was pure ice. One guy took the Kinsman Pond Trail to Lonesome Lake to avoid the ice, and he said the trail was better than Fishin' Jimmy.
It was a great hike! I'd recommend sharp microspikes or crampons. There was ice on the trails plus the river crossings. |
