I had to check the calendar again, it felt like April out there. Rotting snow and no jackets required for a lot of the day. We started up with just light traction and as we got closer to the junction to Pierce summit, the trail became a posthole trail of tears. Our littlest hiker put on her new snowshoes as to not fall into the deep holes. Between the junction and Eisenhower, we all put on snowshoes which made for nicer going except where there was exposed rocks. The final section up to Eisenhower we put spikes back on. It was bare rock with puddles at the summit. After a quick celebration of one of our party’s winter 48 finish we heading back the way we came and had a fast descent down Crawford path to beat the rain . The trail like likely be a more rotten mess after New Year’s Eve rainfall. Be prepared to make footwear/costume changes if heading out anytime soon. Maybe bring spare socks for all the slush . |
