 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Normally, the Class VI portion of Old Troy Rd. is not accessible in winter as it's not plowed. But it had been driven and I was able to get to the trailhead. There were a few inches of snow on the road. It was rutted and had a snowy hump in the middle, so AWD or high-clearance is recommended; I got in and out with an Impreza. If the road melts out completely and turns to mud, I would not risk driving it. The trailhead parking area had been packed down well by vehicles. |

Mt. Monadnock via the usually-inaccessible Dublin Trail. In January. What a weird winter.
Snow depths are only a few inches at most along this entire route with lots of bare ground and ledge down low. About midway up the trail I started seeing black ice, all avoidable. About 0.6 mi. from the summit I put spikes on as the ice got more significant and left them on until a little below this point. Above treeline was a beautiful winter landscape. Until we get more snow, snowshoes are of no benefit here.
The forecast turned out perfect, with zero wind and bright sun; not cold at all. I had the summit to myself for a few minutes before others arrived.
For what it's worth, I talked to some folks who came up Marlboro Trail and they said the access road for that trailhead (also not plowed in winter) was rough but doable with care. |
