I used snowshoes the whole trip today. Spikes went for a ride. The other ten on the trail today all used spikes or crampons. They all worked well for the conditions. Some of the steeper sections of the trail are getting icy, so micro spikes might not cut it so well. The lowest sections of trail are well consolidated and packed. The steep sections are loosely consolidated snow with some ice under, so crampons would be the best choice to avoid slipping. The ridge was a little less consolidated with some new snow and minor drifting. The chimney bypass was easily negotiated in snowshoes. I snowshoed the ski trail to pack down the numerous boot tracks. PSA: use the hiking trail if you hike in boots. Ski trails are for skiers. |
