Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Cannon Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Lonesome Lake Trail, Hi-Cannon Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, January 16, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking @ Lafayette Place. Lot would be manageable for any vehicle.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First few are bridged, one easy stepover, one to rock hop
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Hi-Cannon could definitely use some fresh blazes, especially with all the switchbacks. Couple leaners but nothing posing too much of an issue. The older sign at the Hi-Cannon/KRT junction is barely legible, time for that one to hit the auction.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met some very happy pups out today, Jackson stayed home, no ladders for him. The ladders are currently about 95% snow/ice free so if your dog needs the snow for traction it might be a good choice to skip Hi-Cannon.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: NA

Comments
Comments: Original plan was to hit the Kinsmans but the forecast just kept deteriorating so we decided to put in a shorter day. Lonesome Lake Trail has a bunch of frozen footprints in what was probably slush after the storm but they are only about an inch or two deep. At higher elevations the trail has decent footing from the recent storm. As mentioned above the ladders are currently about 95% free of snow/ice. For anyone expecting to use it, I was happy to see that the mystery rope is no longer there. This gets Tom to 25% on his SSW 48 over 70 bid. Had the pleasure of meeting grid finisher Donna Dearborn in the parking lot. Pretty good day for a plan B. Sidebar: all ancillary trails have tracks on them (Lonesome Lake, Joe Dodge Cutoff, KRT in both directions up top).
