microspikes all the way. Leaving snowshoes in the parking lot was the correct call, with only a few inches of snow anywhere. A couple sets of recent tracks, but nothing that compacted the trail--or needed to. Views to south from near Balanced Rock were good, but Old Top had no view further than across to the ski area; too bad. On a warmer day, trail will be unpleasantly wet; today, it was happily frozen.
We avoided trying to complete the loop over the Bulkhead, because it's often hard to follow, and we were suspicious about potentially bad iciness.
