Comments: No peaks today, giving some space to the the many long weekend hikers. Instead we decided to fill a gap - the last 4/10's of the Mt. Clinton trail between Mizpah and the Dry River Cutoff junction. Crawford is in tremendous shape - a sidewalk. Spikes perfect, bare boots less due to some slick spots. Sandals would work (with socks)! Put on the snowshoes at the Mizpah Cutoff junction. It had seen much less use, still soft from the Friday storm. We helped to smooth and firm it up. Non-profit group Rippleffect out of Portland had 8-10 winter tents pitched around the hut and a dozen or so high schoolers up for the long weekend. Hard to tell if anyone has been on Mt. Clinton this winter. There seemed to be about three feet of snow in and around the trail, but firm enough underneath to only sink six inches or so with shoes. The duck-unders in summer were too high to climb over, and hands and knees to get under. Lots of ducking too as the canopy was down to shoulder height in many spots. The one crossing near the junction with Dry River Cutoff was a good four foot drop to unstable ice on both sides. We were glad to turn around at the junction! Had a sandwich and some hot tea at the hut, and some nice conversation with a couple hikers out of Easton NH. Contemplated going up to Pierce on the way out, but heard a group butt-sliding on Webster Cliff going up so decided to skip that bobsled run. Wandered through the Nauman tent site and then cut through the woods to the Mizpah Cutoff junction and headed back the way we came. Mizpah Cutoff had seen a lot of traffic since we came up and was a nice soft track going down. Put the spikes back on at Crawford and enjoyed a leisurely walk out, being passed by many folks in a big hurry to get somewhere.
