Comments
Comments: Kelley and Lawrence Trails have been lightly used, but there is a clear single track. Old Mast Road has seen more traffic. Snow cover is constant from Ferncroft parking area to the summit. Temperature today was hovering near 40F and partly sunny, so the snow was soft throughout the day. Micro-spikes worked great and there were no postholes. I saw one set of snowshoe tracks, and I considered using mine, but the spikes did just fine. Footing was generally very good, and I only needed to dodge deeper melt puddles a few times near the summit. The recent tracks ended at the south peak, but did not descend to the ledges and view. Don't miss out on the view! At the summit, turn right, pass some big boulders, descend through a narrow patch of brush, and behold the stunning outlook. The walk through the box canyon on Kelley Trail was a highlight.

With the forecast for 4 inches of snow on Thursday night (Jan. 19) and 12 inches on Sunday night (Jan. 22), I think snowshoes will definitely be the footwear of choice quite soon.
