Hard to believe this is still still accessible in Mid-January! Success Pond Road has not been closed yet. It's a little rough in places and I was glad we took the older Subaru Forester with more ground clearance than my new Subaru Impreza, however I think we would have made it. The road really isn't all that bad.
From the get-go we were looking at 4-6 inches of unpacked snow. It seems no one has been up there since the last big storm. There were postholes for about a quarter mile but we could see where they stopped and turned around. After that we saw almost no sign of human activity. There were a few spots towards the top that resembled monorail but hard to tell with 6-8 covering it.
We came across a few blowdowns that required us to go around, climb over or crawl underneath. The biggest challenge was the chimney near the summit. We couldn't find a bipass so we just buckled down and managed to get through it (and back up it on the return, and then back down it again to help my partner, and back up it yet again... Ooffff, for sure the hardest part of the hike).
Mahoosuc Trail is steep! Lots of ups and downs. |
