The plentiful snow we were promised did not come down low, below 3,000’ there is no correct choice for what to wear. We snowshoed but switched several times to bareboot and spikes as the trail only had a couple inches of fresh snow leaving the trail still very rocky with running water and mud. Upon reach the 3,000-3,300’ mark snowshoes is the way to go where snow depth get better and rocks are better hidden. Between 4-8 inches of fresh snow up to the junction with Franconia ridge where we then encountered a consistent 8-10 inches and knee deep drifts. Two of us did and out and back to flume in snow shoes so the trail is lightly broken. On the way down we switched to spikes at 3,200’ as snow shoes were tough with exposed rocks and ice under the snow. |
