Nineteen Mile Brook is a nicely-packed sidewalk. Microspikes would be do-able but snowshoes are the better choice. On every other trail listed here, snowshoes are an absolute must.
Carter Dome Trail up to Zeta Pass is relatively well-packed without major drifts. When I arrived in the Zeta Pass area, I saw no junction signs. Either they were hidden under deep drifts, or the current snowshoe track cuts off the corner and avoids the actual junction (or maybe I wasn't paying attention).
Carter-Moriah Trail across South and Middle had some deep drifts but was traveled without much difficulty even when breaking trail. Imp and North Carter Trail, however, were broken out with great difficulty today by others ascending that route. 2 hikers did not have snowshoes and the track is very chewed up, unfortunately. Both of these trails had some very deep drifts and snowshoe-sized postholes down into water. It was not easy to travel on these trails today due to the depth of snow.
My understanding is that the AMC would rather people not cut through Camp Dodge to get to Imp. I bushwhacked SW over Cowboy Brook from the hard northward turn that Imp Trail makes when descending toward Route 16. This bushwhack is easy and pleasant in different conditions, but was difficult today due to the amount of snow. Still, it made for a good alternative to complete the loop. |
