Couple of huge trees across Kelley Trail that I'm guessing may have been there for years. They're cool to walk under but might be more challenging if there's significantly more snow. |

Solo snowshoes from start to finish but variable conditions and see caveat at the end. Kelley Trail is now one of my favorites and was in good shape after previous snowshoe tracks yesterday/today, except for a couple of very short stretches with deep moose postholes. Followed one set of snowshoe tracks up Lawrence Trail per yesterday's trail report and tough conditions with crust to break through, "styrofoam" chunks of crust breaking off and some softer snow up higher. Old Mast Road was in good shape too, although still soft. One set of tracks going down Oliverian Brook Trail but no tracks on Cabin Trail or Old Paugus Trail.
Caveat to conditions is that I was followed by a couple without snowshoes (who at least subsequently recognized they should have brought them) so trails may be a little choppier. Good news is that their postholes weren't too frequent and were generally only up to 6 inches deep, and there was probably some benefit to them helping to break up the crust. Definitely needs some more snowshoe love but hopefully some of the hard work is done, if it doesn't freeze up first. |
