 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The Imp and North Carter trails were very sparsely blazed, so following them after a heavy snow requires some care. Other than that, no notable issues |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
The 19 Mile Brook trailhead parking was full when I rolled in around 8:30 AM, so I parked down the road at the Great Gulf trailhead. $5/day parking fee or an annual pass such as the Interagency pass required at that lot |

 | Comments: |
The Camp Dodge cutoff and the Imp and North Carter trails were not broken out, so I ended up doing the honors. The Carter-Moriah Trail south of the North Carter junction was broken out all the way to Carter Dome (save for the heavily postholed section ascending the north side of Mt. Hight), and since I was hiking south as everyone else was going north, the trail got progressively more packed down, which was a godsend for my sore thighs after that four miles or so of solo trail breaking. Same deal for the Carter Dome and 19 Mile Brook trails- well packed out all the way back to route 16.
The Carters got clobbered with snow over the last week or so- there was about 1 to 1.5 feet of the stuff at the trailhead and the lower parts of the Imp Trail, 2-3 feet around 2,500-3,000 feet, and 3-4 feet above 4,000 feet, with some snow drifts even deeper. Needless to say, snowshoes were a no-brainer today. Lots of good views from the usual lookouts as well as places where there normally aren't views; it's amazing what becomes visible when standing on 3-4+ feet of snow.
#31, 32, and 33 on the Winter 48 are in the books! |
