Comments
Comments: Well we set off to hit all three Carter’s and possibly Lethe. When we were in the parking lot we noticed a few larger groups and most people had snow shoes which made all of us happy because the trail was still very soft and you could tell when a bare Booter or Spiker was in front due to the imprints but at least I didn’t do too much damage on 19 mile Brooke. Once we hit the junction to Carter Dome trail we saw some of the people who are wearing spikes switch to snow shoes as it wasn’t as packed out as towards the hut. We headed up and found that the track was not correct to Zeta pass and we saw one snowshoe print from maybe a day ago heading in the direction it should be so we followed that and it came out to the junction where entire group was standing. We had a snack here and hung our bags and went off to Carter dome for an out and back. The trail was very soft as the group we just saw seem to have packed it out a little more from recent snowfall. When we hit the summit we were the only ones there turned around and headed back to find that some of even our prints were blown over due to the heavy winds that were coming through. I unfortunately saw two people who had spiked and started to post hole up to their knees in some spots and we hope that no more people with that would go through this trail as it was starting to set up as a nice track. We ended up heading up to South Carter and then over to middle, saw the original group we saw Zeta pass and some other groups passed us all with snow shoes on. Once we passed South and in between middle we saw a group that had mistaken not bringing snow shoes so there were two people with only one snow shoe so there was many post holes that were a few feet deep in places and that group was heading over to the hut so I suspect that the trail is very holy now. We got to the spot where we were going to check how lethe was going to be as I hear it’s a pretty brushy bushwhack in the summer time and we saw one set of tracks and we decided to go for it and we followed their tracks and floated on top to the High Point of Lethe which was super super easy which was great . We then got to the North Carter Junction and headed down to see that the trail seems to start getting packed out and we knew the little foot and crew was heading that way as well so we knew we would run into them sooner than later. Once we caught up with them we noticed that they had been trying to fix the trail as it seem to be a mess with not much traffic on it . We then headed in front and we’re really trying to not break an ankle in the very deep and sometimes crotch deep post holes that were into where the water would be then two people that I personally knew came out and said that they had tried to do a Moriah wildcat traverse but had to turn down North Carter trail to bail out as they were the only ones who touched the trail between Moriah and North Carter . Unfortunately one of them had snow shoes and the other one did not and so we put them in front and try to fix the trail as much as possible. I had heard that the camps did not want Joe Dodge people in in the summer which to me wouldn’t think that any difference as the camps are all closed up in the winter time so unfortunately we decided to follow the not great whack to cowboy Brook and down the road instead of the normal winter route through the camps since we still went through the camps just in a different portion of it. There probably would’ve been a base as this was very soft and new with only a few tracks through it. We got to the road and put our headlamps on just so the cars wouldn’t hit us as it started to get fully dark out at that point. We didn’t get to the parking lot where it was still decently full and there were cars parked on the side of the road past the parking lot and said goodbye to everybody that we had Hiked with as well as met along the way.
