First accent attempt to lionhead winter route. Winter route open, summer route officially closed. We are the only ones completed this trail yesterday.
Trail is loose powder. The two sections of rocks at the beginning of the vertical accent were burried in snow, no holds at all, making our accent very challenging. Snow was deep, crampon were not always stepped in snow, making us in an unstable condition at the rocks. We don't have ice axe, only crampon and a rope. We had to try to hold every dead tree brunch to secure ourselves. The person used the rope belaying me in the front on the way up, and behind on the way down.
When we came out the ridge, it was blizzard condition. No visibility. No trace to Lion head. We returned back the same way very soon.
Crampon and ice axe were the must have in this condition. Impossible to accent or descent on microspike. |
