Trails: Starr King Road, Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 31, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the winter lot of US 2 in Jefferson that is nearly across the street from Starr King rd. This VERY large, nicely plowed lot is steps from Starr King Rd that leads to the trailhead. The lot is marked with a green and white “Trail Parking” sign that can be seen above the snow berm. Note that Starr King rd is only plowed to the residences. It is not plowed to the trailhead. Though three vehicles braved the short road and managed to park in the summer lot, I was not taking unnecessary risks. It adds such little mileage (0.3 miles, I think) to just park in the winter lot and walk up to the trailhead.

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: My dog did fine in a winter coat. There are no treacherous obstacles on this trail. I kept him close as this is a popular trail and I didn’t want him to be tempted to jump on people.

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Water bottle encased in wool sock insulator. Set up on a higher rock on trail so it could be seen easier.

Comments
Comments: Out and back on Starr King Trail.

Starr King is well blazed in updated yellow blazes. There is a fantastic trough shaping up on the trail! Out of the 8 people I encountered today, three of us were wearing snowshoes. I mostly wore mine because it just snowed this morning and I wasn’t sure how much snow was added in higher elevations. I found that only a few inches of fresh powdery snow were deposited throughout the trail. Thankfully a snowshoer was out first thing this morning tramping that down. The spike users did NOT posthole as the trough was nice, wide and firm.

Of note, I went out to the viewpoint that is just past Waumbek’s summit and saw that Kilkenny Ridge Trail had a faint trough. It looks as if no one has been down it in the past few weeks, but at least some brave soul(s) I assume ventured out to the Weeks peaks.
