Trails: Carr Mountain Trail, Waternomee Falls Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 31, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small area plowed out on Clifford Brook road by the trail sign about 1/4 mile before the actual trail starts, no issues, road was plowed and got sanded while we were on the trail
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Few small open hops down low, no issues
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Two leaning step overs about a quarter mile before the summit, otherwise no significant blowdowns. Very sparse blazes except for a short section about a half mile from the summit where about a half dozen very new blazes randomly appeared - overall the trail could use more blazes especially higher up when the corridor becomes more indistinct with increasing snow depths.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Maddie did great - she's well conditioned for winter conditions and has very toughened paw pads - she's light enough where she mostly stayed on top of the crust
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Random car key hanging on a branch by the parking area, looked like it had been there a while

Comments
Comments: Type two fun breaking out the western half of Mt. Carr trail today - unsure when this trail last saw any traffic. On average 8-12" sand-like snow covered by a thick crust which made for tedious and annoying trail breaking, slightly lower amounts before the Waternomee Falls spur and some higher drifts within a mile of the summit. Trail corridor overall not too tricky to follow even when crossing through the logged areas but more blazes up high would be helpful. One set of snowshoe tracks on the eastern half of the trail likely from the past few days, very visible but very slightly windblown. Beautiful but very chilly and windy winter wonderland at the summit, no real views to speak of but some nice glimpses of Moosilauke on the way down. The trail is VERY rough broke with two sets of snowshoe tracks up and back, but even the hike down was tricky at times because the pieces of icy crust in the footbed didn't allow us to smooth out the track as much as we'd like - needless to say if anyone else is crazy enough to hike this trail in winter snowshoes are absolutely mandatory, anything less would be dangerous and beyond inefficient. That being said, it was a great day for a good workout and lots of solitude in the woods.
