All trails from start to finish were well consolidated snow. The Engine Hill bushwack follows a fairly direct line, mostly around elevation 3300, all through open woodland and glades. Except for the beginning swamp section that has a bit of open water that the track avoids. The bushwack joins the Isolation Trail for 50 yards before heading left on the Iso Express bushwack. The beginning of the bushwack snakes down to the stream at a bridged crossing and then up into open woodlands. It then follows a fairly direct route up to the Davis Path through mostly open woods. Another 0.2 miles on the Davis Path to the Isolation Spur and the summit. The sections of Rocky Branch Trail, Isolation Trail, and Davis Path that the bushwacks bypass have seen any traffic. Total hike was 11 miles.
Of the 9 hikers today, use of snowshoes and spikes was an almost even split. Either worked well, although the track is perfect for snowshoes right now. |
